Announcing our new online course: Embedding Reflective Practice in Early Childhood Programs

Early childhood leaders juggle many demands: meeting changing community needs, partnering with families, and supporting staff in a field where turnover is often high. What if one set of skills could help with all of it? Our new on-demand course is called Embedding Reflective Practice in Early Childhood Programs. Participants will build reflective skills that make them more effective leaders—whatever their role. They will also learn to foster those skills in others.

This course is:

  • Designed for child care providers, early childhood educators, child care center directors, Head Start staff and administrators, early childhood special education coordinators, early childhood technical assistance coordinators
  • Self-paced and available 24/7
  • Affordably priced at $200 for 14 hours of content

What is reflective practice?

Reflective practice is “a tool that invites us to pause and slow down to become aware of thoughts, feelings and reactions that arise in everyday interactions” (Sherman, 2024). Studies have linked reflective practice to improved staff retention and stronger relationships with families and children. Reflective practitioners also improve their emotional awareness, perspective-taking, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Embedding Reflective Practice in Early Childhood Programs explains why reflective practice works and gives you the tools to embed it in your organization.

What you'll learn

The course opens with two pre-modules that ground you in early childhood development, followed by five modules that build your reflective practice skills step by step:

  • Pre-Module 1: Understanding the Foundations of Early Childhood Development
  • Pre-Module 2: Pairing Ages and Stages with Key ECSE Practices
  • Module 1: Essential Elements of Reflection
  • Module 2: Holding a Reflective Lens as a Supervisor/Leader
  • Module 3: Embedding Systems Thinking and Reflective Practice Skills within Implementation Science
  • Module 4: Holding a Reflective Lens to Support Health, Wellbeing, and Staff Retention
  • Module 5: Holding a Reflective Lens in Relationship-Based Professional Development

“Reflective practice helps professionals respond thoughtfully instead of reactively, build a supportive work culture, and keep talented people on their team,” says CEED Director Ann Bailey. “This course is a great introduction to reflective practice, or a refresher for those who have engaged in reflective practice before. We know early childhood professionals are very busy, so this course is designed to fit into your schedule in whatever way works."
